Every Job Has Potential Hazards – Even One That Puts You Behind a Desk

“Clasp your hands together”, began Mike Ryan, owner of Leading Edge Physical Therapy in Lakeland, FL.

“Which thumb is on top?”, he asked. A few attendees had the courage to answer.

“Okay, great! Now switch thumbs”, he instructed. “How does that feel?”

“Weird”, said one of the attendees. The room erupted in laughter.

Smiling, Mike answered, “Different, right? That is what today is about. Doing things differently.”

Leading Edge is a local physical therapy facility with knowledgeable staff, an incredible reputation, and a mission of helping others. At the helm, Mike Ryan leads with passion. He was recently recognized in The Ledger’s “The Best of the Best”, where he was voted one of the top 3 Physical Therapists in Polk County. Not an easy feat.

From the moment this lunch began, I knew that we had chosen the right speaker. Mike was energetic and engaging. He had members of the audience doing stretches, and his staff enhancing the presentation by demonstrating the infamous repositioning desk. The desk they use in their office can shift from a sitting desk to a standing desk with the push of a button!

As I stared at the ceiling with my hands behind my head and my chest pushed out, I had to ask myself, “Why are we doing this again?” And his words became clear – “Today is about doing things differently.”

Every year, millions of people are affected by Unsupported Elbow Syndrome. This is an unfortunate and common condition that Mike noticed after years studying the factors that contribute to poor posture, stiff neck, and back and shoulder pain in office workers. Alltek Services provides IT infrastructure support for over a thousand employees. The vast majority of these employees work at a desk for most of the day. We took this opportunity to partner with Leading Edge to deliver an informative lesson on how to mitigate the risks of sitting at a desk all day.

Sitting is the new smoking. It leads to slow metabolism, multiple compressive forces on the lumbar spine, and negative changes in breathing patterns. For these reasons, Mike suggests three key points that he reviewed at this Lunch and Learn:

1. Reposition at your desk: Slide your chair underneath your desk to allow elbow support, place your keyboard and mouse on top of the desk, and slide your monitor back.
2. Change Muscle Lengths Frequently: This involves a number of stretches that can be done at your desk! For a complete lists of stretches, as well as examples, please feel free to reach out to myself or Leading Edge.
3. Change to a Standing Workstation: You may not be due for a new desk yet, but when you are, make sure you purchase an adjustable station! Check out the example of how much pressure this small change can relieve.

Seeing the audience engaged with the message and taking notes was an incredible sight. I even spoke with an attendee who was shopping around for adjustable desks for their employees. I practice these little stretches every day, and my posture has improved significantly.

Alltek Services is grateful to have clients and partners that love to give back. It gives us pride in what we do, and we are constantly looking for opportunities to deliver value to the community.
